Day 18

July 17, 2019

The original Michael J Fox gave us a lecture on your environmental trust fund at work. Before

beginning, he talked about active learning. He emphasized the importance of getting out of the

classroom and have more hands-on experiences when learning. He proceeded to talk about

changing behaviours in order to reduce waste. We watched a documentary about a middle school's

project on reducing waste and learned about how New Brunswick manages its waste. Green bags are for compost, blue bags are for recycling and clear bags go to the landfill.

We then had project time where groups began to work on their prototyping and the business plan in

preparation for the final pitch day. Everyone got their supplies and worked hard for 3 hours. There

was a large variety in the prototype design and each represented how each idea would work. We all

did a great job!

After we had lunch and then went to David's presentation on game theory. First, he had a Q&A

session about himself and some life advice but then proceeded to give an awesome lecture on an

Introduction to Game Theory! There was a rock paper scissors tournament where Lisa emerged as

the champion! To learn about strategy. we played games like connect 4, battleship, king or queen of

the castle, quarto, dots and boxes and hangman. As we discovered, there are many different criteria

for a game and many variations that define each different game.

Before dinner we had another hour of project time where we worked even more on our

deliverables! This is the last bit of project time we’ll be getting for a while so everyone was really

eager to get lots of work done.

Then we had our workshops hosted by our awesome PA’s! Caroline had a cheerleading workshop

which involved dancing, throwing, cheering and jumping. Andrew had one on Climate Change where

the group took action. Grace had one on Molecular Biology where each SHAD handled DNA, and Saarah and had one on Coping and Breathing which included meditating! Everyone had lots of fun!

To wrap it up, we had an hour of committee time, where all of the committees gathered to work on

various projects for things such as month book, variety show and open day. Finally, we had our evening announcements where we broke down the process and had some

shoutouts. Here’s to day 18 at SHAD!
