July 12th started with another classic breakfast at Jennings Hall: french toast, potatoes, ham, and scrambled eggs. After breakfast the SHADs arrived at the Avard Dixon building at 8:30am for their first seminar. But first, Program Assistants David and Yasna put on some funny improv skits with the participation of SHADs. The first seminar was a presentation by Program Assistant and musician Chesky who presented the Benefits of Music all about how listening and practicing music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other activity. Next, we got a seminar on feminism in science by Christiana Boyce. Unfortunately Christiana never finished her presentation as so many questions were asked by engaged SHADs. Despite this, the SHADs learned so much from an expert on feminism. The next two lectures were by our wonderful Program Director - Erin, and our Assistant Program Director - Justin. Erin talked about the beneficial effects of some illnesses such as Sickle Cell Anemia and Hemochromatosis. Justin discussed the effect of health inequity around the world.
After an entire morning of seminars, the SHADs were tired and hungry. Luckily some food was in the near future. The SHADs dressed up in business casual to eat sandwiches and meet and mingle with undergrad Mount Allison students, learning about their research projects. The SHADs enjoyed listening to the student’s short 3 minute presentations on each of their projects followed by an hour long question & discussion period. A big thanks goes out to the MTA students for sharing their cool projects.
Afterwards, the SHADs were thrilled to be given 1.5 hours of free time. Some SHADs went downtown to get food, or souvenirs while others just stayed at the Bennet Residence to sleep. After the SHAD’s free time, the SHADs learned Bollywood dancing from Saarah one of the Program Assistants. With loud music and fun dance moves, this activity was a hit. After dancing, the SHADs headed for dinner at Jennings Hall. Dinner was salmon, rice, and vegetables. Once dinner was complete, the SHADs had an hour of committee time working on preparing coco hut, writing month book, and various other activities.
Coco hut and SHAD rave took place in Gracie's Café.
The Program Assistants participated in the 11:11pm toothbrushing ritual at the coco hut!
Finally the highlight of the day began: coco hut. Coco hut was a blast. There were many great performances, and everybody had something to share. After the coco hut, the SHADs took the dance floor for the “SHAD rave” where we danced in Gracies Café until almost midnight. A day which started out slow sure had an exciting end!
