Today was our first day at Shad—the beginning of a new and exciting experience! On this very day, Shads from all over Canada were anticipating arrival at Mount Allison by various means of transportation, such as air, train, and car.
Those of us who had arrived via airplane earlier had sat in a circle and told each other what our names, hometowns, and favourite desserts were; ice cream had seemed to be popular. Then, we had played Two Truths and a Lie for the purpose of getting to know each other better, before riding a shuttle to Mount Allison, our home for the next month.
Upon our arrival, we met the Shad MtA staff and went to see the dorm rooms that we would be staying in for the first time. Then, in the lounge, we made door signs by writing our names on pieces of paper and name tags for our gym bags. We subsequently played some fun icebreaker games outside so that we could learn everyone’s names. For example, one game involved standing in a circle and throwing a ball around; the person who threw the ball had to say the name of the person to whom they were throwing it. Afterwards, we went to Jennings Dining Hall to have our first meal at SHAD; everyone loved the delicious roast beef, potatoes, and veggies that were served.
Next was a competition to see which team could build the tallest tower and design the most creative flag, and during this time, some more Shads arrived at MtA! When the time limit was up, the towers and flags were judged by some of the staff. A short while later, after we had cleaned up, we were informed of the results and formally introduced to all the staff. We then returned to the lounge to have evening announcements; a lot of Shads stayed behind after to play a suspenseful game of Mafia. When curfew time came around, everyone went upstairs, and just like that, Shad MtA Day 1 was complete! Overall, our (last-ever) first day at Shad was absolutely incredible, and we are so eager to see what the next 26 days will bring!
